FASHION SHOW
It may have been a cold wet November evening in Coláiste Eoin on Thursday last but nothing could dampen the spirits
of the huge group who attended and participated in the Coláiste Eoin Fashion Show. The event was a collaboration between
the school and the Parents’ Council. As always the evening was very well supported by the community with almost 400
people packing the hall to view the spectacle of style and glamour for all.
The night was a huge success thanks to the generosity of the boutiques that sponsored clothes for the evening. Shops
included Fairytale Moments, New Look, Dorothy
Perkins, Dress Connection, Norma Hunt, Alana, Darling Wear, Kaideen Knitwear, Serena, Evans, Elanna, Kennys Menswear
and Des Doran Menswear. Fab Hairstyles and Clare in particular were run off their feet as they created amazing up styles
for all the ladies involved. Tracey Cahill from Beauty Secrets was also on hand throughout the day to add the finishing
touches to all the make-up. The event really involved the entire community and was an enjoyable evening for all who attended.
Obviously something like this takes a huge amount of organisation and commitment so thanks must be extended to the
following people, the staff and students from Coláiste Eoin, The Parents Council for their Trojan work and all the
local sponsors. A special word of thanks to Kieran Fitzgerald who provided the lights and music for the evening
keeping us all entertained. However the evening would not have been possible without one man Jim Coleman, Jim
literally worked night and day surrounded by a number of demanding women. We would like to thank Jim for his help
and let him know how much we appreciate his effort.
EXAM RESULTS
The staff students and Board of Management of Coláiste Eoin would like to extend its’ congratulations to
both the Leaving Cert and Junior Cert classes of 2009. The Leaving Cert. of course received their results in
August of this year and are currently either beginning or preparing to embark on their Third Level journeys.
We wish them every success. The Junior Cert class received their results in September. The students were all
very pleased and are now settling down to the challenge of Transition Year. Well done to everyone and good luck
in the future.
DEBS
On 4th September the Leaving Cert class 2009 said their final farewell to Coláiste Eoin as they held their
Debs Ball in the Ashtown Park Hotel, Gorey. The evening was a great success as the class caught up on each other’s
plan s for the future. The presentations on the evening included a gift to class teachers Ms. Dalton and Ms. O’Keeffe,
Mr. Daly Principal and the debs committee for their expert organisational skills. The evening was a mixture of
excitement for the future and sadness as they leave school and home to embark literally on the rest of their lives.
We wish them the very best.
MEITHEAL
Congratulations to Kevin Mc Carney, Ciara Heffernan, Sam Whelan, April Faulkner, James O Brien, Ryan Hickey,
Alex Hayes, Joan Doyle, Caroline Murray and Grace Murphy who are this year’s Meitheal Group. Following an intensive
week long training programme this summer the leaders will work with the new first year group. Meitheal seeks to
promote and foster good relationships within the school community thereby creating a secure, safe environment for
all involved. This year’s Meitheal leaders will continue the work started when the concept was first introduced in
Coláiste Eoin we wish them every success.
HIGHER OPTIONS
The 6th year students recently attended a Higher Options Exhibition in the R.D.S. Universities, colleges
and organisations from both Ireland and the U.K are represented on the day. The conference offers students the
opportunity to speak to experts in all manner of career areas. They then gather the relevant information in order
access their own chosen field of expertise. The day was swiftly followed by an intensive Study Skills Day offered
to the students by Deputy Principal Mr. Burke and teacher Ms. Farrell. It appears they are now armed with the tools
they need to succeed in this difficult year.
YOUNG OBSERVERS AWARD
This year Coláiste Eoin has decided to take part in the Young Observers Award. The scheme is run by Wicklow
Uplands Council, Irish Uplands Forum and The Heritage Council. The Young Observers 2009 will be a learning programme
about local landscape for Transition Year students. It aims to raise awareness about the local landscape of Wicklow/Dublin
uplands and its sustainable development in the context of social economic and environmental issues. The programme will
incorporate place-based education which draws from local culture, history, and geography to create “sense of place”
local traditions and stories of the unique landscape. The students who have been selected to participate are
David Mc Carney, Ronan Byrne, Matthew Pearson and Darragh O Keeffe. If they complete the three day workshop,
the action project and a presentation to the public the students will receive the Adrian Phillips Award. We wish
them well in this exciting and innovative venture.
STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
The students chosen for this years Representative Council are James Byrne, Áine Dalton, Paul Hogan, Anne O Keeffe,
Darragh O’Keeffe, Jackie Kinch, Eoin Coogan, Sorcha Kelly, Kieran O’Sullivan, Shauna Donegan, Brandon Doyle and
Áine O’Keeffe. The students are selected by their peers and attend a two day workshop to assist them throughout the year.
The Council will meet on an on-going basis with this year’s staff rep Ms. Byrne. It is hoped that the students will take
this opportunity to discuss issues their classmates have raised. The job of representative is a highly sought after
position within the school and we wish the students well in their endeavours.
TRANSITION YEAR
The Transition Year has commenced an eight week programme in Taekwondo-do. Korean in origin, Taekwondo-Do is
famous for its spectacular range of kicks and punches. The study of Taekwondo-Do aims not only to develop the student
physically, but mentally also, creating a well rounded and balanced individual. To achieve this aim General Choi
Hong-Hi based his art on Asian moral culture and included in his art the Tenets of Taekwondo-Do; Courtesy, Integrity,
Perseverance, Self-Control, Indomitable Spirit. Their instructor is the ever patient and inspiring Jimmy Dowling.
They also travelled to the Ploughing Championships and had a wonderful day exploring the stalls and meeting the
characters.
DUCK RACE
On Wednesday 29th September the Transition Year Students took to the water in Hacketstown as they held their Duck
Race. The idea was to raise funds for the Transition Year Program and the event was indeed a huge success. While most
of the students looked on 4 brave men and one woman took the water, Dylan Bowes, David Lofts, David Mc Carney, Killian
Dempsey and Clare Doyle braved the River Derreen in an effort to retrieve the ducks. The students thoroughly enjoyed
themselves in what could only be described as perfect conditions for the occasion. Well done to the entire class who
collected money Darragh O’Keeffe who provided the ducks and Andy Rossiter the winner of the first prize with duck
number 477. A huge thanks to the local community who once again helped in the organisation of the event.
MENTAL HEALTH PUBLIC SPEAKING
Following the phenomenal success of last year’s team of speakers from Coláiste Eoin there was a huge interest in
squad places for the Mental Health Public Speaking Competition. A large group from both Fifth and Transition Year
participated in trials this week. The final team was decided by three teachers who were highly impressed by the
standard and confidence of these novice speakers. After much deliberation the chosen team are Ronan Byrne,
Deirdre O Neill, Sarah Dalton and Rachel Tallon. We wish them the best of luck.
BANK OF IRELAND
Many thanks to Ciara and Celine from Bank of Ireland Tullow who spoke to all the senior students on Tuesday.
The ladies went through a number of skills the students need to acquire for their future such as C.V writing and
Interview Techniques. They also explained budgetary control and the importance of saving regularly. The students
enjoyed the session and found the tips provided very useful.
COUNTY ENTERPRISE BOARD
On Monday 5th of October two representatives from the County Enterprise Board visited 5th and 6th Year Students
in Coláiste Eoin. The programme for the day was an intensive one which was designed to give students an insight into
what is required to set up and run a business while inculcating an entrepreneurial mentality into the students thinking
regarding their own future careers. The day was highly successful on many levels mostly because it ties directly into
the L.C.V.P link module Enterprise Education. The L.C.V.P Programme has proved to be highly successful in Coláiste Eoin.
RUGBY
The Transition Years were thrilled to see Vinny Mahon Youth Development Officer for the IRFU. Vinny took the
students through the basic rugby skills of passing and tackling. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and apparently
performed very well.
TRANSITION YEAR NEWS
Transition Years are extremely busy at the moment already preparing for the school show. They have completed
an intensive dance programme with Niall Mc Carney. They are also organising a duck-race in an effort to raise funds.
Meanwhile they had time to attend a Road Safety Programme presented by Garda Bernard Cloney. In the midst of the
adventure that is Transition Year the students were shocked by the power of the image and words of Garda Cloney as
he explained the importance of road safety.
SECOND YEAR TRIP
The second years took off to Enniskerry last week where they took part in a multi-activity program in the
Eco-Adventure Group. The students took to their bikes, went orienteering, took part in team tasks and mastered
the art of archery. The day was a huge success as the students learned how to work as a team and co-operate with
each other.
