ALL IRELAND PUBLIC SPEAKING WINNERS

Coláiste Eoin students proved on the 4th April that they’re not just good they are in fact the best in the country! The students took on Coláiste Aireagail, Ballyhale, Kilkenny and Beech Hill College, Monaghan, teams who clearly represented the best in the country. The final was held in Trinity College, Dublin and the event was given the due pomp and ceremony it deserved. The winning team of Anna Byrne, Sadhbh Byrne, Sinead Byrne and sub Martin Byrne were excellent on the evening and spoke with true conviction on the need for positive mental health in today's world. The terrific win was a huge source of pride to the school and it’s students and illustrated the huge efforts made by everyone in the school community to achieve national honours. The judging panel praised the Coláiste Eoin students for their clear understanding and ownership of the topic while also backing up with information with localised surveys. This year’s topic was “Ireland 2009 It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness”. The topic is particularly apt in light of present economic problems faced by the country. The team’s approach was certainly one of positivism, a sentiment we all need to hear and believe in dark times.

MYTHICAL IRELAND MURAL

In 2007 Coláiste Eoin were awarded a grant under the National Association of Principals & Deputy Principals (N.A.P.D.) Creative Engagement initiative. The school had submitted an application to the group who wanted to promote and develop the “arts” in 2nd level schools. The artwork was launched in Coláiste Eoin on 19th March. The subject of the piece is Irish Mythology and the students who worked on it were steered by local artist Lar Griffin and teacher Mary Hunt. Their aim in collaborating on the work was to take some of the more popular Irish Mythical Legends and bring them to life through vivid imagery. The eye is immediately drawn to well known characters such as Brian Boru and Cu Chullainn yet on closer examination it is the intricate details that make the piece so vibrant. The mural stands proudly in the G.P.A. of Coláiste Eoin, not only does it brighten the huge space but it’s stories will offer inspiration to those who look upon it for many years to come. Well done to all involved.

Well done also to Shane Howard, Mark Kenny, Enda McGrath, Sinead Byrne and Anne O’Keeffe on being chosen to represent the school in this years Bank of Ireland Awards. All the students have achieved very highly in their chosen fields of excellence academic and sporting and Coláiste Eoin are very proud of them. The award scheme is a wonderful way to acknowledge the many things currently taking place in Coláiste Eoin. Shane Howard then went on to win the Regional Senior Sports Award. At the presentation he was commended for his dedication to his sport. It was a great achievement for Shane who is one of four students who will compete for the overall prize which is a bursary of €1500. We wish them all the best.

Well done to Conor Mc Carney 1st Year who won the prize for best-dressed character from a novel in aid of World Book Day. The students all completed a project outlining the plot of their novel and what it was about the book that inspired them. They then had to choose a character from the book and take on that individual’s persona for the duration of the English class at least. The characters ranged from Cinderella to Willy Wonka to monks and Conor the winner was of course Robinson Crusoe.

READATHON

Coláiste Eoin students took part in a Readathon. The students could choose a book from the library in Coláiste Eoin or read their own. The money raised will be used to purchase more books for the library. Many thanks to those involved.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT DAY

On Thursday 15th January the senior students of Coláiste Eoin were given the opportunity to take part in a Personal Development day. The course dealt with personal development, personal etiquette, career planning and personal grooming. The content covered skills such as perfect posture, telephone etiquette, table etiquette, how to succeed at interviews, recruitment from an employers point of view and wardrobe planning. The day proved informative and interesting.

FITNESS BY DESIGN

Fitness by Design came to Coláiste Eoin to present a unique and exciting physical awareness programme to our school. They are Ireland’s first mobile fitness testing service. The programme focuses on supporting not only students wishing to understand performance related fitness but also those who wish to live a healthier and more active lifestyle. The students were exhausted having completed all the tests but found the day highly useful. Declan Wall and Paul Quinn two former PE teachers run the Programme. Well done to everyone who participated.

BAG PACKING

Well done to the 2nd year girls who raised almost €800 bag packing in Tesco Arklow. The girls raised the money for the Chernobyl Children’s Charity, which is very well supported locally. The idea for the fundraiser came about in a recent CSPE class where students are required to complete an action project.

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS—MS IRELAND

The second year students participated in a sponsored climb of Lugnaquaillia in support of MS Ireland. They raised over €1,500 for the society and presented the cheque to Mr. Edmund Burke the chairman of the Carlow branch of MS Ireland. The group was led by the experienced upland guide Richard More O Ferrall and teachers from the school. Richard presented the School Library with a copy of the rare book ‘Wild Wicklow’ and the school presented him with a framed outline of the origin of the name ‘Lugnaquillia’ from the Irish meaning ‘Hollow of the Grouse’. Many thanks were extended to all who supported the fund raising by Mr. Burke.
