Congratulations to the following students who have been awarded
scholarships to French and Gaeltacht colleges, Darragh O’Keeffe, David
Mc Carney, Carol Tompkins, Sinead Byrne, Sadhbh Byrne and Anna Byrne. The
students are in 2nd and 5th year and all completed an exam to be eligible
for the scholarship. The scheme has been running for many years in the
V.E.C and is a fabulous opportunity for all the students. We hope they
benefit from their three week stay in both Connemara and Roscrea.
MACBETH
5th years travelled to see Macbeth in The Helix. Second Age Productions once again proved hugely entertaining and managed to bring the words on the page to life.
AN TRIAIL
6th years also visited the theatre to see An Triail an Irish drama on the
Leaving Cert Course. The drama is a hard hitting reflection of Ireland in
the 1960 s and deals with the plight of a young woman who finds herself
pregnant in a cold and unforgiving community. The plot follows the heroine
through her daily struggles until eventually it all becomes too much for
her and she takes her own life. The production of the drama was not only
sympathetic to the issues but helped students grasp the cultural
differences between the Ireland of fado fado and the Ireland of today.
MENTAL HEALTH PUBLIC SPEAKING
Congratulations to Anna Byrne, Sadhbh Byrne and Sinead Byrne who were runners up in the Eastern Final of the Mental Health Public Speaking Event. The girls travelled to Bray on Monday last to compete in this prestigious event and addressed the topic "You can t always build the future for our youth but you can build the youth for the future". The team addressed the topic bearing in mind the obvious connection with mental health issues. Unfortunately the girls were not victorious but then again maybe they achieved their intention by bringing a delicate subject to the fore.

COLAISTE EOIN SCHOOL VARIETY CONCERT
Congratulations to the Transition Year Group 08 who performed to packed
houses on Thursday and Friday last. The show comprised of two halves the
first half was a modern fairytale with a very modern twist Rumpled Winehouse was the story of the King (James Donlon) who had lost his remote control and his poorwife (Grace Murphy) desperate search for something to appease him. The secondhalf was the students version of the timeless classic Romeo and Juliet Kevin McCarney and Fiona Hobson. As always the sketches were full of incredible singing and dancing Danielle Byrne was amazing singing When There was Me and You from the ubiquitous High School Musical. Amy Winehouse appeared looking not only healthy but radiant in the guise of Caoimhe Bowes Kim Tallon Fiona Hobson Grace Murphy and Danielle Byrne. Dances were performed to Britney and Rihanna and thanks to
Niall McCarney a past pupil who invested lots of time and effort in the choreography all the moves were on time and elegant. The boys got their turn to Shine as they performed the Take That classic and embarrassed women young and old in the audience as they serenaded them. Áine Dalton took the role of Leona Lewis as she performed Bleeding Love as the Montagues and Capulets realised their love for each other. As always there were outstanding performances from individuals namely Kevin McCarney, P.J. Byrne, Willie Byrne, James O’Brien, Paddy McDonald, Ciara Heffernan, Aoife Byrne and Kim Tallon. BORD BIA DEMONSTRATION

A cookery demonstration involving five contemporary dishes was a great experience for all the Senior Cycle Home Economics students. All the students in attendance received a free recipe pack. This service is available nationally to all schools and was certainly found to be not only highly enjoyable but also hugely informative in Coláiste Eoin.

The event involved raising sponsorship for activities organised in the school. In Coláiste Eoin students played a wide range sports from table tennis to badminton. Each year group was assigned an activity and were given two weeks to raise funds. IRISH DEBATING SQUAD TRIALS
Well done to Anna and Sadhbh Byrne who travelled to U.C.D on the 1st of March to compete in trials for the Irish Debating Squad. It was indeed an honour to be even asked to represent their school and County at this prestigious event. The girls had a great day and after three exhaustive impromptu debates they were unfortunate not to be selected. The girls spoke on three motions “That this house would legalise prostitution”, “that Cathal O Searcaigh be removed from the Leaving Cert Course” and “That this house would allow Iraq to develop nuclear weapons”. The girls gave an excellent performance throughout and Coláiste Eoin is very proud of them.

Congratulations to Michael Murray and Sadhbh Byrne who received their certification before Christmas from Brendan Hayden, which allows them to coach under-age G.A.A sports. Both students completed an intensive training course under the supervision of Brendan Hayden County Youth Development Officer and were thrilled to have
completed the course to a satisfactory high standard.
BANK OF IRELAND REGIONAL AWARD WINNER
In March of this year Shane Howard was the lucky recipient of The Bank Of Ireland Regional Sports Award. Shane was nominated because of the level of his sporting success and evidence of his dedication to his chosen sport. This year he was selected to play for the Irish u17 squad who have since gone on to qualify for the European Championships.
