TRIP TO THE DAIL
The day following the budget of 2009 the Fifth Year students from Colaiste Eoin were in Dail Eireann. They got to experience firsthand the spectacle that is the inner sanctum of the Government. The students had decided to visit Dail Eireann as part of their L.C.V.P course which is a Leaving Certificate subject. The atmosphere was tense, exciting and memorable as speakers debated the intricacies of the budget and the implications it had for everyone. The class found the day memorable and were thrilled to have had the day organised by Mr. Daly and Mr. Fleming.

ASH ANIMAL SANCTUARY
Helena from Ash Animal Sanctuary in Co. Wicklow came to Colaiste Eoin with her beautiful chocolate boxer to raise awareness among the First Years regarding the care and attention animals need on a daily basis. The family run charity looks after animals that have been abandoned or can no longer be cared for in their homes. The group re-house cats and dogs. The students were thrilled to see Helena who is regular fixture on TV3 s morning program and the beautiful dog she brought in showed just how hard the team in ASH work.
THE WIZARD OF HACKETSTOWN
Despite horrendous weather Colaiste Eoin Transition Years managed to fill the sports hall on the 4th and 5th of February last as they performed The Wizard of Hacketstown. The show which is the 16th annual event was a huge success. The script and performance had something for everyone. It is a wonderful play to showcase the talent in the class but it also combines singing dancing and local rivalries in an inventive and imaginative way. Of course the group did nt exactly stick to the original script as Darragh O’Keeffe took charge and added in his local witticisms!
On the night Scarecrow (Ronan Byrne) gave a more than convincing performance, Lion (David McCarney) looked as though he was born to be on stage and Dorothy (Ciara Byrne) and Tin Woman (Mary Doyle) looked and acted like pros. Toto (Gavin Keogh) was a far from obedient dog and our witches Sweaty Betty and Anita Repeater (Jackie Kinch and David Lofts) were unique to the area in their portrayal of the characters. Elvis and Glenda (Podge Smith and Sarah Dalton) saved the day for everyone and brought the story to life.
Of course The X Factor featured in the script or rather Knockannana Needs Talent. Ciara Byrnes rendition of The Climb was powerful and compelling while Dale Blake sang a smooth version of Thunder Road. The entertainment factor came with Jedward (Shane McGrath and Killian Dempsey) who were oh my God Fabulous Like while Dylie Afro brought the house down with Sex On Fire. The entire class were involved in the show and while it is difficult to mention everyone in a short piece Thomas Speed took on the persona of a teacher in a very convincing way! The girls held the evening together with Sarah Coleman, Leanne O’Keeffe Clare Doyle and Nicole Curran dancing and generally holding the crowds attention with their lively moves. Mark Byrne, Gordon Hickey John O’Keeffe Dean O’Neill and Matthew Pearson were the best X Factor judges I’ve seen in a long time. Thanks also to Ricky, Jamie and Jason.
The show is a huge task and as always we would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone in Hacketstown for their help and support. Ultimately however it’s about the children. Each year the talent proves better than the last and it gives the students a chance to show the school and community a side of themselves we have never seen before. The confidence and lessons they learn from this will stay with them for a long time. Well Done Everyone.
DAVID LOFTS
The school would like to congratulate Transition Year student David Lofts for his participation in The All Ireland Talent Show. David is indeed a unique talent and kept us entertained for many weeks. The entire school was thrilled to see him doing so well. Students in particular enjoyed seeing one of their own on television and showed tremendous support for David. The staff students and community at large would like to wish David continuing success; he is a charming unassuming teenager with a great voice. We wish him continued success.
TRIP TO BELGIUM
Coláiste Eoin was the winner of last years Mental Health Public Speaking Competition. The reward for their efforts was a trip to Belgium. On the 4th February Sadhbh Byrne, Anna Byrne, Sinead Byrne and Martin Byrne travelled to Brussels with their teacher Liz Farrell and representatives of Mental Health Ireland. The trip was thoroughly enjoyable as the past pupils toured the city were invited to visit The European Parliament and spoke to representatives of Mental Health Europe. It was a fabulous trip and thanks to everyone involved.
MENTAL HEALTH PUBLIC SPEAKING
Congratulations to the Coláiste Eoin team who have progressed to the All Ireland Finals of The Mental Health Public Speaking Competition. The team were victorious in the Regional Final beating stiff opposition from Scoil Aireagail Ballyhale and C.B.S Thurles. The next round took place in Hotel Kilkenny on the 22nd March where they beat Glenstaal Abbey, Limerick and C.B.S. Enniscorthy. They will compete on 24th April in Trinity College. A bus will be travelling from the school and the students can show their support to Deirdre O Neill, Ronan Byrne, Sarah Dalton and Cathal Fitzgerald. The school has a proud history in both debating and public-speaking and are thrilled that this young team has accomplished so much. We wish them every success and are extremely proud of their achievements to date.
HAMLET
The 5th Year students travelled to the Helix on the 18th March to see a Second Age production of Shakespeare’s most complex play Hamlet. We hope they enjoyed the production and it helped to bring the bards work to life.
DIFFERENTIAL APTITUDE TESTS
Following the mock exams the 3rd Year students completed their D.A.T. Tests. The results of which will be with them soon. The assessments help students gauge their aptitudes and skills in a wide range of areas. They assist students greatly in choosing subjects for Senior Cycle and also prospective career choices.
SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE
Is leir go bhfuil an gaeilge i reim i gColaiste Eoin as the school was abounding with Irish for Seachtain Na Gaeilge. Students participated in a Trath na gCeist and there was even a rounders game through Irish. All the students enjoyed the experience and the vitality of the language was heard throughout the corridors as everyone tried their best to abair cupla focail.
CHERNOBYL
Since its establishment in 1991, Chernobyl Children’s Project International (CCPI) has delivered over €80 million in direct and indirect humanitarian aid to the Chernobyl region. CCPI aims to restore hope to the people of the Chernobyl-affected region. They continue to deliver relevant projects and programmes by maintaining strong links with many international and Belarusian agencies and organisations and by then adapting and changing the work that they do according to the changing needs of the children, the adults and the communities they work with. Over the years many families in the community have looked after children on behalf of the Chernobyl Project. As a result the 3rd year girls decided to raise money for this worthy cause. The project is part of their C.S.P.E program which is an exam subject for the Junior Cert. Following weeks of planning the students embarked on a bag packing campaign and managed to raise €800 for this worthy cause.

HEINEKEN CUP
Sean O’Brien took a timely trip to Colaiste Eoin with the Heineken Cup. As expected the students were thrilled to have Sean in the school and questioned him incessantly regarding his return to rugby. The visit was timely as the students are preparing for a forthcoming game. Under the direction of Vinnie Mahon and Mr. Burke the boys feel they are ready to take on another school. While there may be not be a huge tradition of rugby in the school their enthusiasm and dedication will make them worthy opponents.
COUNTY CARLOW LIBRARY QUIZ
Two teams from Coláiste Eoin of Darragh O’Keeffe, David Mc Carney, Enda McGrath and Eoin Fitzgerald and team two of James Shannon, Garry Byrne, Orla Gartland and Eva Byrne finished in joint second place only half a point behind the winners Knockbeg. Team two having lead right up to the last round. However it was team one who ended up claiming second place after extra questions.
RUGBY
On Wed. April 21st Coláiste Eoin Transition Years and some 5th Years took on Tullow Community School in their annual rugby game in Tullow RFC. We started on the back foot against a more experienced Tullow outfit. After two tries from the home team CE got into their rhythm with a superb score from Joey Garahy. The conversion was narrowly wide from Ronan Byrne. Moments later a run from wing forward Cathal Fitzgerald split the Tullow cover and finished with a try under the posts converted by Fitzgerald. Tullow brought on some experienced players to seal this tough encounter by 34—12. Coláiste Eoin lads can be proud of themselves, considering only two of their outfit play rugby regularly.
